Bentley A.'s Story

After High School I attended CSU Bakersfield for two years until I soon decided that I wasn't quite ready for school yet, I wanted to party a little... After the partying had died down, somewhat, I went to work for the Santa Barbara County Park's Department for almost 3 year's. Then in 1974 I returned to Bakersfield and went to work for Warner Cable Channel 2 as a Technical Director and Staff Announcer. That job got me very interested in electronic's so before leaving the job, in June of 1976, I gave the Manager of Warner Cable Channel 2 (Lyle Murphy) one last chance to keep me as an employee by asking him for a raise. When he turned me down I walked out of the office never to return... Shortly after leaving the station I contacted an old friend of mine that used to be a roommate of mine at CSU Bakersfield. He was now working as a Naval Recruiter, in San Fernando, CA, and I asked him if he thought there might be any chance of my being able to re-enlist in the U.S. Navy. The reason I said re-enlist was because after my High School graduation my number came up in the Armed Forces Draft and to keep from having to go into the Army I enlisted in the Navy. Unfortunately, prior to my High School graduation, my family ...Expand for more
doctor (Dr. Keagy of Delano) had diagnosed me as having a duodenal ulcer. This fact was overlooked by the AFEES Station, Los Angeles, CA, even that is was stated in my enlistment form and they didn't catch it until I had already started "boot-camp!" Anyway, the result was my being discharged after only 1 1/2 month's served, and I was assigned an RE-4 Re-enlistment code. That code meant that I was unable to be enlisted by any of the Armed Forced... Anyway, since I had never had any problem's with to so called "duodenal ulcer," which was diagnosed in early 1970, my buddy said all we could do was give it a try. So, after getting all of the enlistment paperwork out of the way the next step was for me to be certified, by another doctor, as to my not having this ulcer. To do this I went to a hospital in Fresno, CA to get an "Upper and Lower G.I. done. After all was completed the doctor typed up a six page report that eventually said that I didn't have nor did I ever have a duodenal ulcer and he mailed a copy to my recruiter in San Fernando, CA. My recruiter then sent a copy to the AFEES Station in Washington D.C. for a final decision. Keep in mind that all of this had been completed by June 1976... To be continued...
